Nigeria’s Dangote fertiliser plans to expand its production capacity

Nigeria’s Dangote fertiliser plans to expand its production capacity by building four new urea granulation units using technology from a subsidiary of Germany’s ThyssenKrupp.

Each unit will be capable of producing 4 235 metric tons of urea per day, boosting Dangote’s annual output from 2.65 million tons to more than 8 million tons and placing the company among the world’s largest producers of the compound.

The new units will be constructed adjacent to Dangote’s existing fertilizer complex in Lekki, Lagos, which has been operating with ThyssenKrupp’s UFT technology since 2021. The expansion will employ the German firm’s advanced low-emission UFT Fluid Bed Granulation Technology, currently used in over 70% of global urea production.

Under the agreement, ThyssenKrupp will provide a complete process design package along with proprietary equipment, including granulators and scrubbers. The project will also integrate ammonia-conversion technology to incorporate ammonium sulfate by-products into the urea granules, reducing waste and improving logistics.
