South Africa’s (SA) Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Ronald Lamola, says the country will work to persuade G20 member states attending the summit to adopt a leaders’ declaration despite the absence of the United States (US).

Lamola confirmed that the summit will proceed without several major leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and China’s President Xi Jinping. He says the US will be marked absent because its delegation was formally invited.

“In their absence, the countries that are present must make a decision. And that is what is currently unfolding. The sherpas are negotiating the leaders’ declaration. We are moving towards making a decision in terms of the leaders’ declaration. Negotiations are happening. But we are forging ahead to persuade the countries that are present that we must adopt a leaders’ declaration,” Lamola said.
