South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa, who also leads the African National Congress (ANC) party, will serve out his full five-year term, the party has affirmed.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said this during a briefing on the outcomes of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at Luthuli House over the weekend.
The comments come after Ramaphosa’s political overview report, in which he challenged party critics to stop speculating about his departure. He made clear that he would resign only if formally requested to do so by the NEC.
Mbalula added; “There are tendencies within the party that try to distract the organisation by chasing imaginary scenarios, like Ramaphosa stepping down. It is a ghost. It does not exist, yet some continue to pursue it.”
