Women for Change welcomes SA’s declaration of GBV as a national disaster

In South Africa (SA), the Women for Change Organisation, the group behind the silent nationwide shutdown, says it has been overwhelmed by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to officially declare gender-based violence (GBV) a national disaster.

The declaration comes as thousands of activists across the country take part in demonstrations calling for urgent action to address one of SA’s most persistent social crises. The organisation says the move marks a major breakthrough after years of pressure from civil society.

Women for Change Spokesperson Michael Masina said the announcement reflects the determination shown by survivors and activists throughout SA.
“This is the outcome we have been fighting for, for the longest time,” Masina said. “Next week Friday, the 28th, we have a follow-up meeting where a detailed plan will be presented to us. We expect clarity on the next steps, the classification that will be implemented, and the role civil society and non-governmental organisations will play in driving tangible and meaningful change for survivors. It is also crucial that existing laws are enforced more effectively.”

Masina added that the organisation hopes the declaration will lead to stronger protection measures, improved support systems and greater accountability within SA’s justice sector.
