Oxfam has renewed its push for global tax on billionaires

Oxfam has renewed its push for global tax on billionaires, arguing that such a measure would help countries fund social programmes, bolster domestic revenues, and strengthen international tax co-ordination.

The organisation’s G20 Policy Advisor, Isobel Frye, was responding to the decision by G20 leaders to endorse the summit declaration at the very start of their meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA), a rare break from the usual practice of adopting it at the end. The United States remains the only member not represented, following Washington’s decision to boycott the gathering.

Delegates from around the world have convened in SA for what is being described as a landmark moment for the country as host of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Frye said a tax on extreme wealth would give governments the means to tackle inequality more decisively. “We’re saying tax the super-rich and use that money to reduce inequality by providing quality services, education, health care, which then generates a healthy and productive further new generation. And so, you look at sustainability and solidarity,” she explained.
