Rwanda has rejected comments by French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the resumption of flights at Goma airport.
Macron had reportedly said that the M23 rebel group and those controlling the airport had not done enough to allow flights to operate safely.
Rwandan officials pushed back on the remarks, stressing that the country remains committed to regional stability and is working to ensure secure access to key infrastructure.
Dennis Beru, journalist and Team Lead at Grassroot Journalism, said the situation shows the complexity of the security issues in the region.
“While concerns about safety are valid, Rwanda has been taking steps to support stability. The region’s security challenges require careful co0ordination among all parties,” Beru said.
The comments come amid ongoing concerns over the security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the M23 remains active.
