Human rights groups are urging the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her government over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the unrest that followed the country’s disputed election.
The organisations claim security forces were involved in mass killings and the clandestine disposal of bodies, saying these actions point to a deliberate attempt to hide the extent of the violence. They argue the scale and pattern of the abuses warrant international intervention.
The government has not commented on the demand for an ICC probe and has yet to release an official death toll from the post-election clashes.
Rights advocates say that, with no clear domestic accountability mechanism in place, an independent investigation is necessary to determine what happened and who should be held responsible.
