Le Rona Re Batho Memorial Trust has launched the Maseru Massacre Art Exhibition and Musical Tribute in East London

In South Africa (SA), the Le Rona Re Batho Memorial Trust has launched the Maseru Massacre Art Exhibition and Musical Tribute in East London, marking the 43rd anniversary of the tragic 1982 Maseru Massacre.

The event honours the lives lost and celebrates the resilience of the victims’ families.

The massacre claimed the lives of 30 African National Congress militants, who were in exile in Lesotho, along with 12 Lesotho nationals, in an attack by the apartheid-era SA Defence Force.

Nomzamo Nkantshu, organiser of the exhibition, urged the government to step up support for the families and survivors. She highlighted that many widows are still struggling to obtain military service numbers for their late husbands, a key step to access pensions and education support for their children. “Families are still faced with challenges. Widows are knocking on different doors, but no one is assisting,” Nkantshu said.

The exhibition and musical tribute not only commemorate the victims but also aim to raise awareness of the ongoing struggles of their families, keeping their stories alive for future generations.
