FIFA is set to press ahead with plans to introduce VAR checks on corner kicks at the 2026 World Cup, despite domestic leagues rejecting the idea for wider use
At October’s IFAB meeting, football’s lawmakers agreed VAR could be expanded to cover incorrect second yellow cards, but rejected FIFA’s proposal to review corners.
That means the world football governing body will effectively create a trial for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada next summer. FIFA has often tested innovations at its competitions, including semi‑automated offside technology and referees announcing VAR decisions to the crowd, and could use the same mechanism to begin reviewing corners.
