United Nations has voiced concern over what it describes as growing repression of political opposition and media organisations in Uganda

The United Nations (UN) has voiced concern over what it describes as growing repression of political opposition and media organisations in Uganda as the country prepares for general elections scheduled for January 15, 2026.

In a recent statement, the UN warned that restrictions on free expression, limitations on political activities and increasing pressure on journalists risk undermining the credibility of the upcoming polls. Rights groups have also reported arrests of opposition supporters and a tightening of space for independent media.

Speaking from Kampala, correspondent Cassius Ochokombege noted that the concerns follow weeks of heightened political tension, with several opposition gatherings disrupted and reporters complaining of intimidation while covering political events.

Cassius explained that the UN’s alert comes at a critical moment, as observers continue to call for a level playing field and greater protections for civil liberties in the run-up to voting day.
