South Africa’s (SA) National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure NATJOINTS and the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry have agreed that security needs to enhanced at the commission’s hearings in Pretoria.
They have released a statement following their meeting where they discussed the safety of the commission’s whistleblowers and witnesses.
This follows the killing of the commission’s ‘Witness D’ who has been identified as Marius van der Merwe.
He was gunned down in the presence of his wife and children at their home in Brakpan in the east of Johannesburg, on Friday evening.
“While extensive measures have been put in place to secure witnesses and officials since the start of the Commission, the meeting identified a need to heighten these measures by roping in the NATJOINTS and all other relevant role players. As investigations proceed into the murder of Van Der Merwe, members of the public are urged not to speculate,” a joint statement reads.
