World Bank has instructed the Government of Malawi to return $700 000

The World Bank has instructed the government of Malawi to return $700 000 after it emerged that some local councils failed to use project funds in line with agreed guidelines.

According to the Bank, an audit revealed that portions of the money channelled through specific councils were not applied to the intended development activities, prompting the demand for repayment.

The funds were part of a broader support programme aimed at strengthening local governance and improving service delivery across districts. However, irregularities detected in the expenditure raised concerns over accountability and compliance.
