The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has moved to strengthen its co-operation with the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) following a high-level meeting held on Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria.
Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, met with Lena Kjellberg, Head of the Regional Africa Programme at the FBA, to advance joint efforts aimed at reinforcing West Africa’s peace and security architecture. The discussions centred on the work of the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), which plays a key role in mainstreaming gender across regional initiatives.
The partnership provides a renewed platform for collaboration between the two institutions, placing gender-sensitive approaches at the heart of regional peace and security strategies. Beyond security, both organisations signalled openness to expanding their joint work to other areas linked to gender and development in West Africa.
According to ECOWAS, the co-operation also encourages shared learning and the exchange of experiences, allowing the EGDC and the FBA to draw from each other’s institutional practices as they work to promote gender equality and support long-term peacebuilding efforts in the region.
