SA will not be part of the discussions.
The United States (US) will today convene a meeting of officials from the Group of 20 major economies to begin planning for next year, when Washington assumes the rotating presidency of the bloc.
The meeting will bring together G20 Sherpas, Senior representatives tasked with shaping the agenda and priorities of the grouping. However, South Africa (SA)  will not be part of the discussions.
The US President’s Donald Trump administration has confirmed that South Africa has been excluded from the G20 process, citing claims of a so-called white Afrikaner genocide, allegations that have been widely dismissed as unfounded.
Former US Ambassador to SA Cameron Hume, who served in Pretoria between 2001 and 2004, has expressed concern about the implications of SA’s exclusion.
Hume warned that sidelining SA could have broader consequences for multilateral engagement and weaken Africa’s voice within global economic and political decision-making platforms.
The move has drawn criticism amid growing concern about rising geopolitical tensions and the future cohesion of international institutions such as the G20.
