United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stern warning against corruption, describing it as a destructive force that costs lives, deepens inequality, and harms the environment.
Speaking on Monday at the eleventh session of the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), also known as Cosp11, Guterres stressed that corruption is far from a victimless crime. “Every Dollar lost to economic crime robs people of a better future,” he said, highlighting how corruption continues to evolve alongside a rapidly changing world.
Cosp11, the world’s largest international gathering dedicated to combating corruption, serves as the primary policymaking body of the UNCAC. The conference brings together global leaders to develop strategies aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and integrity in governance.
“Corruption fools conflicts, entrenches inequalities, and drains the resources needed to protect people and planet,” Guterres added. “This conference is about shaping tomorrow’s integrity, because in our rapidly evolving world, corruption is evolving too.”
