French court has sentenced former DRC rebel leader Roger Lumbala to 30 years in prison

A French court has sentenced former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) rebel leader Roger Lumbala to 30 years in prison after finding him guilty of complicity in crimes against humanity.

The Paris Criminal Court ruled on Monday that Lumbala provided aid and assistance in acts of torture, inhuman treatment and rape, which were classified as crimes constituting torture under international law.

In addition to the lengthy prison sentence, the court imposed a lifetime ban on Lumbala from French territory. The verdict followed deliberations by judges and jurors, bringing to a close a landmark trial that highlighted France’s use of universal jurisdiction to prosecute international crimes committed outside its borders.

Political analyst Bulelwa Mukenge said the ruling sends a strong message against impunity. “This conviction shows that those accused of grave human rights abuses cannot assume they will escape justice simply because the crimes were committed elsewhere,” Mukenge said.

He added that the case could have wider implications for accountability in the DRC. “It reinforces the principle that international crimes remain prosecutable, regardless of time or location, and that survivors’ voices matter,” Mukenge noted.

The trial has been widely viewed as a significant moment in the global fight against impunity for crimes against humanity.
