Zimbabwe striker Macauley Bonne has expressed his delight after being recalled to the national team ahead of this month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing his return as long overdue.
The England-based forward has not featured for the Warriors in more than a year but has been handed a surprise call-up by new head coach Mario Marinica for the continental showpiece.
Zimbabwe have been drawn in a challenging Group B alongside Egypt, Angola and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana. Bonne says he is determined to make the most of the opportunity and play his part on the continental stage.
“It feels really good to be back,” Bonne said. “It’s been a long time coming and I’m happy to be part of the squad again. For me, it’s about playing games, scoring goals and seeing how far we can go in the tournament.”
The striker’s return adds experience to the Warriors’ attacking options as they prepare for a demanding AFCON campaign.
