Widespread power outages have been reported in Sudan’s largest cities

Widespread power outages have been reported in Sudan’s largest cities, Khartoum and Port Sudan, after drone strikes hit the Al Mogran power station, a key hub in the country’s electricity network.

Witnesses said flames and thick smoke rose from the station in Akbar, located in the eastern Nile state, an area under army control. An official told the French News Agency that two people were killed while attempting to extinguish a fire after the initial strike, and several others were injured when the facility was hit again in a second attack.

Al Mogran receives electricity from Sudan’s largest hydroelectric source before distributing it to other parts of the country, meaning the damage has had a far-reaching impact.

The army has been engaged in a protracted conflict with the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which have frequently been accused of targeting civilian infrastructure, including carrying out drone attacks in army-controlled areas.
