Foreign companies, particularly from Nigeria and parts of Asia, now control nearly 70% of Ghana’s market, raising alarm among local traders, according to the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).
Outgoing GUTA President Dr Joseph Obeng warned that many of these foreign businesses are outcompeting locals through aggressive pricing, tax avoidance, and labour violations. “Lack of enforcement is deeply worrying because our laws are very clear,” he said. “Foreign nationals are not allowed to operate in designated local markets, yet many continue to flout these rules, undermining Ghanaian traders.”
The union called on the government to step in and enforce existing regulations to ensure fair competition and protect local livelihoods in Ghana’s growing commercial sector.
