A prison officer in Uganda has been dismissed after posting videos on TikTok in which he criticised the government, a move authorities say amounted to gross misconduct.

Lawrence Ampe was investigated over a series of social media posts accusing senior officials of corruption, human rights violations, and the alleged mistreatment of junior prison staff. Prison authorities said his actions breached internal regulations governing the conduct of uniformed officers.

Officials maintain the dismissal was a disciplinary matter, insisting that members of the security services are prohibited from making political statements in public forums.

However, opposition figures have strongly criticised the decision, describing it as another example of state intolerance towards dissent. They argue that the case highlights broader concerns about freedom of expression, particularly for public servants who speak out on social media.

Uganda has increasingly come under criticism from rights groups over restrictions on online speech, as the government tightens control over digital platforms and political commentary.
