A second trial connected to the September 28,  2009 stadium massacre has opened in Guinea’s capital, Conakry, with seven individuals facing prosecution for their alleged roles in one of the country’s darkest episodes.

Among the seven defendants, three are currently on the run, according to court officials. All had previously benefited from a dismissal of charges but were later re-implicated following new denunciations and evidence brought before the courts.

The accused face multiple serious charges, including abuse of authority, murder, rape and torture, as well as complicity in murder, assassination, kidnapping and unlawful detention.

Speaking to Political Editor and Director of Le Populaire, Alpha Abdoulaye Diallo, said the reopening of cases was a critical step towards justice.

“This second trial shows that the search for truth and accountability is far from over,” Diallo said. “For many victims and their families, justice delayed has been justice denied, and these proceedings are an opportunity to address long-standing grievances.”

The September 2009 massacre occurred when security forces opened fire on opposition supporters gathered at a stadium in Conakry, killing at least 156 people and subjecting dozens of women to sexual violence, according to international investigations.

Diallo added that while the trial raises hopes, it also highlights the challenges Guinea faces in confronting its past.

“The fact that some suspects are still at large reminds us how complex and fragile this process remains,” he said. “But holding those responsible to account is essential for national reconciliation.”

The trial comes amid renewed calls from civil society groups for an end to impunity and for sustained judicial reforms in Guinea.
