Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Russia have pledged to deepen cooperation on peace, security, infrastructure, and business initiatives in West Africa, following a bilateral meeting between ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The discussions took place during the 2nd Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in Cairo, Egypt, December 19–20, 2025. Both leaders highlighted recent developments in the region, including elections and efforts to combat terrorism, and explored ways to strengthen ECOWAS-Russia collaboration.
Russia expressed readiness to support ECOWAS’s regional integration agenda and congratulated the establishment of the ECOWAS Business Council.
