The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in prize money for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), raising the reward for the champions to a record $10 million. The tournament which kicked off on Sunday, is being hosted by Morocco.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed the decision, describing it as part of a broader effort to strengthen African football and properly reward success on the continent’s biggest stage. The new prize represents a $3 million increase from the previous edition, after Ivory Coast collected $7 million for winning the 2023 tournament on home soil.
Overall, the adjustment marks a 43% rise in prize money, signalling CAF’s intention to make the competition more financially attractive and competitive. The runners-up will receive four million dollars, while the two teams eliminated at the semi-final stage will each earn $2.5 million.
CAF believes the enhanced rewards will not only motivate teams but also contribute to the long-term growth of the game across Africa, as the AFCON continues to expand its global profile.
