Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad has admitted that there are still areas of concern in his team as SA prepares for the ICC T20 World Cup in February and March in India.
Conrad recently led the side in a five-match T20 series in India, which Proteas lost 3–1. He says the tour provided valuable insight ahead of the global showpiece.
Conrad has identified the need for greater stability in both the batting order and the bowling unit as key focus areas ahead of the tournament.
“I think the top of the order, whether it’s opening or number three, we’ve got two, Quinton and Aiden and we’re probably looking at another batter at the top of the order,” Conrad said.
He also pointed to the absence of key bowlers as a factor in recent performances.
“You’re missing someone like Kagiso, who’s massive for us in the bowling department,” he said.
Conrad added that execution under pressure remains an area for improvement. “I still think we can execute a little bit better with the ball when under pressure,” he said.
Despite the concerns, Conrad believes the team’s recent struggles may be partly due to a lack of match sharpness. “The guys just need a few matches under their belt, we haven’t played T20 cricket in a long time,” he said.
SA will continue fine-tuning their preparations as they build towards the T20 World Cup in India.
