United States (US) has been carrying out intelligence-gathering flights across large parts of Nigeria

Reports indicate that the United States (US) has been carrying out intelligence-gathering flights across large parts of Nigeria since late November.

The operations reportedly involve contractor-operated aircraft that depart from Ghana, fly over Nigeria, and return to Accra, the Ghanaian capital.

A former US official confirmed that these aircraft were among several assets relocated to Ghana by the Trump administration in November. While the exact number of aircraft currently in Ghana is unclear, sources say the missions focus on locating a kidnapped US pilot and tracking militant groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

The flights highlight ongoing regional security challenges and demonstrate the continued US engagement in supporting counterterrorism efforts in West Africa.
