National Liquor Traders in South Africa (SA) are set to host a Tavern Safety Summit in Gauteng tomorrow

The National Liquor Traders in South Africa (SA) are set to host a Tavern Safety Summit in Gauteng on Wednesday to enforce compliance and reduce violence during the festive season.

The announcement follows a deadly shooting at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, on Sunday morning, which left nine people dead and ten others injured.

Police have launched a manhunt for approximately ten suspects, while visibility in the area has been stepped up. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Convener of the National Liquor Traders, Lucky Ntimane, expressed shock at the incident. He said, “We are shattered by this senseless and heinous crime that took place in one of our establishments in Bekkersdal. This is normally a high-turnover season where we make extra earnings to support our families. Now, our traders are scared, wondering who might be next. We send our condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones.”

The summit aims to discuss strategies for improving tavern security, ensuring compliance with liquor regulations, and protecting both staff and patrons during the busy holiday period.
