SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affecting several provinces

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affecting several provinces, including Gauteng, Mpumalanga’s Highveld and escarpment, south-western Limpopo, eastern Free State, North-West, and north-western KwaZulu-Natal.

Forecasters are warning of localised flooding, strong winds, and large hail, as the country prepares for Christmas celebrations.

Johannesburg Emergency Services Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged motorists to take extra care on wet and slippery roads. Residents are advised not to drive through flooded rivers or low-lying areas, and faith-based organisations are cautioned against holding baptisms or ritual ceremonies in rivers during the storms.

Mulaudzi added that emergency services remain on high alert to respond to any incidents arising from the severe weather conditions.

SAWS has highlighted that residents in affected areas stay informed, follow local advisories, and prioritise safety as heavy rainfall continues.
