Family of Zambia’s former President, Edgar Lungu, has been granted permission to appeal a SA court order

The family of Zambia’s former President, Edgar Lungu, has been granted permission to appeal a South African (SA) court order directing that his body be returned to Zambia for burial.

SA’s Supreme Court of Appeal confirmed the decision on Tuesday, allowing the family to challenge an earlier ruling that compelled the repatriation of the late former head of state’s remains. The court, however, cautioned that should the family fail to proceed with the appeal; they would be liable for the associated legal costs.

The matter has attracted attention in both Zambia and SA, with the dispute highlighting the legal and procedural complexities surrounding the burial of a former national leader.
