Honorable Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Libya’s officials

The African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, Honorable Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Libya’s Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Mohammed al-Haddad, and four officers who were killed in a tragic accident while returning from an official visit to Ankara.

 

In a statement on December 24, 2025, Youssouf extended his heartfelt condolences to the Libyan government, its people, and the families of those who lost their lives. He also conveyed solidarity with the Libyan Armed Forces as they cope with the impact of the loss.

 

The AU Chairperson described the deaths of Lieutenant General al-Haddad and his colleagues as a significant blow to both Libya and the wider region. He commended Libyan authorities for their continued efforts to promote peace, stability, and security, and reaffirmed the AU’s support to the nation during this period of mourning, offering prayers for comfort and strength to all affected.
