Ukraine’s military says it has struck one of Russia’s key oil refineries in the southern Rostov region, using cruise missiles in what appears to be a targeted attack on Moscow’s energy infrastructure.
Social media footage showed a large plume of smoke rising over the town of Novoshakhtinsk, close to the Ukrainian border. Residents in the area reported hearing multiple explosions during the strike.
According to Ukrainian officials, the refinery plays a critical role in supplying fuel for Russian military operations in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian military said British-supplied long-range Storm Shadow missiles were used in the attack.
Russian oil refining facilities have repeatedly been targeted by Ukraine in recent months, as Kyiv seeks to disrupt Russia’s ability to fund and sustain its war effort. Moscow has not immediately commented on the reported strike.
