South Africa’s (SA) National Department of Health says a total of 714 babies were delivered at public health facilities between midnight and midday on Christmas Day.
The first Christmas baby of 2025 was born at exactly midnight at Elim Hospital in Limpopo province. Gauteng recorded the highest number of births nationwide, with 217 babies delivered during the period.
While welcoming the festive arrivals, the department expressed concern over the continued prevalence of teenage pregnancies, noting that more than 30 teen mothers had already been recorded.
Health authorities have reiterated calls for stronger reproductive health education and support for young mothers across the country.
