The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has urged the South African (SA) government to declare youth unemployment a national disaster, highlighting the threat it poses to social stability, dignity, and the country’s future.
While some provinces have made strides in addressing youth unemployment, others continue to lag, the league noted. ANCYL Spokesperson Zama Khanyase said President Cyril Ramaphosa has shown support for their call.
Khanyase explained that such a declaration would allow for a co-ordinated response under the National Disaster Management Centre. “It would require everyone to take action on youth unemployment. Reports would track progress, and funds would be released to support implementation. Some provinces have plans to tackle the issue, but limited resources have slowed progress. Declaring a national disaster would unlock special powers and funding,” she said.
