The United Nations (UN) has raised concerns about the political environment in Guinea ahead of presidential election, saying the campaign period has been characterised by intimidation and repression.
In a statement, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, urged the authorities to ensure that voting takes place in an atmosphere free of fear. He called on the government to guarantee that citizens are able to participate in the electoral process without intimidation or coercion.
Türk said civic and political space in the country has been significantly constrained, pointing to reports of intimidation directed at opposition figures. He also highlighted cases of enforced disappearances, which he said may be politically motivated.
The UN human rights chief further expressed concern about restrictions on media freedom, noting increased pressure on journalists and independent media outlets in the lead-up to the vote.
Guineans are casting their ballots today in an election that is being closely monitored by regional and international observers, amid growing scrutiny over respect for political rights and fundamental freedoms.
