Somalia has condemned Israel’s decision to recognise its breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state

Somalia has condemned Israel’s decision to recognise its breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state, describing the move as an affront to the country’s sovereignty.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said Somalia “categorically and unequivocally” rejects the recognition, accusing Israel of deliberately undermining the country’s territorial integrity. He said the decision violates international law and disregards Somalia’s unity.

Somaliland, in northern Somalia, declared independence in 1991 following the collapse of the central government. Although it has maintained relative stability and established its own governing institutions, it has never been formally recognised by the international community as a sovereign state.

The African Union (AU) has also rejected Israel’s move, reiterating its long-standing position that it does not recognise Somaliland as an independent country. The AU said it remains committed to upholding Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is expected to deepen diplomatic tensions in the Horn of Africa, with observers warning that it could complicate regional relations and ongoing efforts to stabilise Somalia after decades of conflict.
