Broos insists South Africa (SA) must stick to an attacking approach despite needing only a point to qualify for the round of 16.
SA head into the final group match knowing that a draw would be enough to secure progression, but Broos has made it clear that settling for such an outcome could be dangerous. He cautioned that Zimbabwe have shown enough quality in recent matches to punish any complacency.
The Belgian tactician pointed to Zimbabwe’s performances against Angola and Egypt, noting that while there were personnel changes, the team’s overall approach remained consistent. He stressed that Zimbabwe will be playing to win to keep their qualification hopes alive, and that Bafana must focus on executing their own game plan rather than over-analysing the opposition.
Broos also referenced the team’s recent meeting in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in October, when the match ended in a goalless draw despite SA needing all three points. He indicated that his side cannot afford a repeat of that scenario, particularly in a high-stakes tournament setting.
According to Broos, the key will be creating chances and converting them, rather than defending deep and hoping the result works in Bafana’s favour. He emphasised that football can be decided in a single moment late in the game, and that an overly cautious approach could leave South Africa vulnerable.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, are expected to approach the match with urgency, knowing that only a victory will give them a realistic chance of advancing. That scenario, Broos believes, should sharpen Bafana’s focus rather than encourage caution.
