The remains were found near the border between Mozambique and SA. An inquest case has been registered where DNA tests will be conducted to determine the identity of the person. The victim went missing when the vehicle he and his colleagues was swept away when the Nkomati river burst its banks following heavy rains on Christmas Day.
The group had attempted to cross a submerged low-lying bridge towards the Lebombo border post. Provincial Police Spokesperson, Donald Mdluli says the identification of the remains will be prioritised.
“The team recovered the remains through the assistance of a local fisherman who spotted a severed head in the river. However, at this moment we cannot confirm that these are the remains of the missing soldier. We need to conduct some DNA tests to confirm the identity of the owner of the remains that were found here,” he said.
