The African Union (AU) has expressed concern over the United States’ (US) invasion of Venezuela and the reported capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
In a statement, the continental body described the developments as troubling, warning that external military action risks further destabilising the country. The AU stressed that Venezuela’s deep-seated political, economic and social challenges cannot be resolved through force.
The organisation called for an inclusive, Venezuelan-led political dialogue, arguing that only a negotiated process involving all stakeholders can deliver a sustainable and peaceful solution to the crisis.
The AU also reaffirmed its long-standing position in support of respect for sovereignty, international law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, urging all parties to exercise restraint and prioritise diplomacy.
