Several civil society groups and human rights organisations are expected to stage protests outside the British Consulate in Cape Town, the Durban City Hall, and the British Council in South Africa (SA)
The groups, including the Palestine Solidarity Alliance and SA Jews for a Free Palestine, aim to show support for United Kingdom (UK) activists from the Palestine Action group, who are on hunger strike in British prisons. The activists were detained for actions and demonstrations against Israeli-linked weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems and against British military bases for sharing intelligence with Israel. Several hunger strikers have been hospitalised as their health deteriorates.
The activists are protesting their prolonged detention without trial, prison conditions, and censorship. Some of their demands include immediate bail, fair trials, and the closure of Elbit factories in the UK. SA civil society groups, expressed strong support for them. They are drawing parallels to hunger strikes during apartheid and are urging the UK government to ensure the activists’ well-being.
