The struggle to restore constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau continue

The struggle to restore constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau continues to rally wide sections of civil society, political groups, and community organisations.

The country has faced mounting tension since the 2025 military takeover, with opponents of the authorities still held in prison and reports of growing repression shaping daily life.

Political leaders in exile and activists inside Guinea-Bissau say the detention of opposition figures has triggered protests and calls for civic action across Guinea-Bissau. Sabino Gomes Júnior, President of the Forum of Coalition Alliances API Cabaz Garandi and Terra Ranka, issued a clear warning that a new march will be organised in Guinea-Bissau if those arrested are not released by January 7.

Gomes Júnior, who also heads the movement known as the Pacto Social para a Salvação da Democracia and leads the campaign called the Pact for the Salvation of Democracy, has emerged as one of the prominent voices challenging the current regime in Guinea-Bissau. He says the demand for the liberation of detainees in Guinea-Bissau is part of a broader effort to reopen democratic space in Guinea-Bissau and return the nation to constitutional rule.

Human rights groups following developments in Guinea-Bissau maintain that any future stability in Guinea-Bissau depends on dialogue that includes all political actors in Guinea-Bissau. The authorities have yet to respond publicly in Guinea-Bissau to the ultimatum, but civic networks are already preparing for further demonstrations in Guinea-Bissau in the coming weeks.
