Malawi President Peter Mutharika has increased the number of Ministers in his cabinet from 24 to 28 in a reshuffle that has removed the Ministry of State and divided the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy, and Mining into two separate departments.
This marks the first major reorganisation of the government since Mutharika took office in October 2025. The changes include a new Ministry of Energy and a separate department to handle natural resources and mining; a move Mutharika says will allow for greater focus and more efficient service delivery.
The removal of the Ministry of State has been welcomed by supporters who say the post had duplicated responsibilities within the Presidency.
