South African (SA) swimming star Pieter Coetze says his ambition is to head into the upcoming Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Olympic Games as the favourite in his specialist events.
The 21-year-old told SABC Sport that he is determined to take another major step forward as he prepares to lead Team SA at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.
Coetze made his Olympic debut in 2021 and represented SA at his first Commonwealth Games in 2022. Since then, his confidence and experience have continued to grow, highlighted by reaching the final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Reflecting on his journey, Coetze believes those experiences have matured him as an athlete and strengthened his belief that he can compete with and beat the very best in the world.
With Glasgow and Los Angeles firmly in his sights, Coetze says his focus is on consistent improvement, execution under pressure and positioning himself as a leading contender on the global swimming stage.
