The arrival of a Russian warship in São Tomé and Príncipe at the start of January has sparked a heated political and institutional debate in the island nation.
The main opposition party, Acção Democrática Independente (ADI), has accused President Carlos Vila Nova and the government of permitting the vessel to dock and transfer cargo without informing or seeking approval from the National Assembly. ADI argues that the move breaches the constitution, which requires parliamentary authorisation for the presence of foreign military forces in the country.
So far, the authorities have not provided a detailed public explanation, but the incident has renewed concerns about transparency and the balance of power between the executive and parliament.
Political analyst Liberato Moniz says the controversy carries wider implications for the country. He notes that it exposes institutional tensions while also underscoring São Tomé and Príncipe’s strategic location in the Gulf of Guinea, an area that continues to attract growing international interest.
