Relations between Somalia and the United States have deteriorated

Relations between Somalia and the United States (US) have deteriorated after Washington announced it would pause further assistance that benefits the Somali government.

The move followed claims by the US State Department’s Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, who said on X that Somali officials had destroyed a warehouse funded by the US and operated by the World Food Programme (WFP), and had illegally seized donor-funded food aid meant for vulnerable communities.

Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected the allegations, saying the aid in question remains under the custody of the WFP. The Ministry described the claims as inaccurate and stressed its commitment to the proper management and protection of humanitarian assistance.

The dispute has raised concerns about the future of co-operation between the two countries, particularly in humanitarian and development programmes aimed at supporting Somalia’s most vulnerable populations.
