SANCO has praised the ANC for its historic role in the liberation struggle but raised concerns over current governance challenges

South Africa’s (SA) civic organisation, the SA National Civic Organisation (SANCO), has praised the African National Congress (ANC) for its historic role in the struggle for freedom and democracy, while also voicing strong concerns about the country’s current governance challenges.

SANCO acknowledged the sacrifices made by the ANC as a liberation movement, saying these efforts laid the foundation for democratic rule in SA. However, the organisation said serious problems facing the country cannot be ignored.

The civic body, which describes itself as the vanguard of citizens, pointed to the collapse of several state-owned entities, high unemployment, widespread corruption and persistent service delivery failures as key issues affecting ordinary South Africans.

As the ANC marks its 114th anniversary, SANCO says it plans to engage the governing party on these challenges. SANCO National Spokesperson Mzukisi Jam said the organisation will not only take part in anniversary celebrations but will also closely listen to the address by ANC President and SA President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Jam said SANCO wants clarity on progress made on priorities outlined by the ANC leadership in 2025, questioning whether commitments announced previously have translated into real action.

“SANCO will be there to listen to the President speak about the priorities he raised in 2025, to see whether there has been any progress or whether it was merely talk,” Jam said. “We are not expecting a new set of priorities for 2026 while those of 2025 remain unimplemented.”

SANCO says its engagement with the ANC is aimed at ensuring accountability and pushing for tangible improvements in the lives of South Africans.
