SA Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development has praised the National Intersectoral Committee on Trafficking in Persons

South Africa’s (SA) Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel, has praised the National Intersectoral Committee on Trafficking in Persons (NICTIP) for its work in the recent case involving twelve Ethiopian nationals.

The men were rescued in Johannesburg on Monday in a vulnerable state, with initial reports suggesting they might have been minors or potential victims of human trafficking. NICTIP, SA’s co-ordinating body to combat trafficking, investigated the case.

Further inquiries established that ten of the men, aged between 19 and 35, were not victims of trafficking, the Ministry’s Spokesperson Terrence Manase said.

Nel commended NICTIP for its swift response and thorough handling of the case, highlighting the committee’s role in protecting vulnerable individuals while ensuring accurate assessments are made.
