South Africa’s (SA) decision to host naval exercises involving warships from China, Iran and Russia could further complicate its already strained relationship with the United States (US).

A News24 report suggests Pretoria has tried to persuade Iran to participate as an observer rather than a full partner, reflecting sensitivities around how the drills may be perceived by US President Donald Trump.

Last week, vessels flying Chinese, Iranian and Russian flags arrived at SA’s main naval base in Simon’s Town on the Cape Peninsula to take part in the week-long exercise. The drills are being led by China and involve other members of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, SA) Plus, a grouping of major developing economies established in 2006.

BRICS Plus seeks to deepen co-operation among emerging economies and reduce reliance on the political and economic dominance of wealthier Western nations.
