Sudan’s military-led government has returned to the capital, Khartoum

Sudan’s military-led government has returned to the capital, Khartoum, after nearly three years of operating from its wartime base in Port Sudan.

The army was forced out of the city when fighting erupted with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in 2023. However, it regained control of Khartoum in March 2025, which was described as a major military breakthrough.

Although the capital remains deeply scarred by the conflict, signs of gradual recovery are beginning to emerge as government institutions move back. Large parts of the city were damaged or abandoned during the fighting, and basic services are only slowly being restored.

According to the United Nations, at the height of the conflict around five million people fled Khartoum, highlighting the scale of displacement caused by the war.
