Guinea-Bissau is once again facing political and institutional strain

Guinea-Bissau is once again facing political and institutional strain, with opposition figures detained, no inclusive government in place and a transition process largely shaped by military authorities.

The recent visit to Guinea-Bissau by a high-level delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has brought renewed attention to the crisis, reviving debate over how effective the regional bloc has been in helping the country move towards political stability.

Guinean jurist and political analyst Dr Fransual Dias says the current situation reflects deeper structural problems, including weak institutions and a lack of political consensus. He notes that while ECOWAS interventions often help calm tensions in the short term, lasting stability will depend on genuine dialogue between political actors and a clear, civilian-led transition process.

According to Dias, without an inclusive political framework and firm guarantees for democratic governance, Guinea-Bissau risks remaining trapped in recurring cycles of instability.
