A year after Daniel Chapo became Mozambique’s fifth President, his government is coming under increasing fire from opposition voices.

Venâncio Mondlane, former presidential candidate and leader of the newly formed party Anamola, has been particularly outspoken. He describes the administration as “mediocre,” accuses it of lacking vision, and paints a grim picture of the country as “broken and unwell,” with a fragile economy and public services on the brink of collapse.

Looking at Chapo’s first year in office, Dr Wilker Dias, Executive Director of the DECIDE Platform, warns that the challenges run deep. “The government has made some efforts, but key institutions remain weak,” he says. “Urgent action is needed to stabilise the economy and restore public services. Without a clear strategy and inclusive leadership, these problems will only get worse.”
