SA International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola, has arrived in Sudan

South Africa’s (SA) International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola, has arrived in Sudan, Juba to lead a High-Level African Union (AU) Ad-hoc Committee of Five (C5) visit to South Sudan.

The 20-day mission is a follow-up to last year’s C5 Ministerial visit and comes ahead of a Peace & Security Council meeting on Monday, which will assess the current situation in the country. The visit also precedes the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly and the planned C5 Plus Summit, scheduled to take place alongside the Assembly in mid-February.

South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in July 2011, is preparing to hold its first-ever elections this year. The C5’s mandate is to oversee the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan, ensuring that peace initiatives are properly executed.
